His relatives have said today that a full independent investigation will be carried out into his murder.

His family has argued for decades that he was an innocent victim of members of the British Army and loyal paramilitaries who mistook him for a high-ranking member of the IRA.

They also believe that Gardaí was an accessory to spreading false rumors that he was assassinated for being an IRA informant.

Today they announced that former Bedfordshire Police Chief Jon Boutcher will lead a full independent investigation into the murder in Northern Ireland and the Republic.

Jon Boutcher has been involved in a number of high-profile investigations related to the Problems, including Operation Kenova, which was created to investigate the activities of the British agent known as the Stakeknife.
