The number of people claiming Pandemic Unemployment Payment (PUP) dropped by just 3,600 in the last week.

In total, 206,341 people received the PUP today, and tomorrow they will be paid 61.3 million euros.

However, today’s figures do not take into account the decision to impose tougher restrictions on Dublin last Friday.

The numbers getting paid are now down 65% from their peak in May.

6,333 people closed their claim in the past week, and 4,568 are due to receive their final payment tomorrow.

The food and lodging services sector saw the largest drop in claims, followed by wholesale and retail trade, motor vehicle repair and education.

People ages 35 to 44 represented the largest cohort that returned to work.

“The reduction in the number of people receiving PUPs is welcome,” said Social Protection Minister Heather Humphreys.

“However, it is important to note that today’s figures do not reflect the decision made last week to move Dublin to Level 3 restrictions.”

“We are experiencing unprecedented times in our country and it is essential that now more than ever we increase our efforts to suppress the Covid-19 virus.”
