Jamie Carragher has questioned where Kai Havertz fits into Frank Lampard’s system at Chelsea after another disappointing display.

The Blues have spent over £ 220 million on novelties this summer. Just shy of his club record, the £ 71 million spent at Havertz is the costliest of his new recruits.

Havertz struggled to make an impact on his debut in the last 3-1 win Monday at Brighton. And he was the man to make way at halftime when Chelsea slipped into a 2-0 loss at home to Liverpool.

However, Havertz can perhaps be considered a bit unfortunate. His retirement came when he did so after Andreas Christensen’s red card just before half-time for a rugby tackle on Sadio Mane.

However, how to get the best out of Havertz remains an enigma for Lampard. While his retirement was as tactical as anything else, Carragher doesn’t think Lampard still knows the player’s best position.

“I think the problem with Frank is that he is new to the job and has made all these changes,” Carragher said in Sky sports.

“It is difficult to manage change. When you think of great coaches, Klopp really hasn’t managed to do that in any way at Liverpool.

“Maybe in the next year to 18 months, the team will evolve and the second Klopp team will come. I’m not even sure that Pep Guardiola really had that in his coaching career.

“I saw Chelsea last season as a 4-3-3 team, and every now and then Frank would throw a three to the back tactically in the big games. He beat José Mourinho twice and here he beat Guardiola.

“It went 4-2-3-1 at Brighton with Havertz on the right. Today, he played it on a false nine.

“Obviously he is a quality player, there is no doubt about that. But I’m already thinking, ‘where does Havertz play?’ even after just two games. “

Due to the costs involved in bringing Havertz to the club from Bayer Leverkusen, Carragher insists that Lampard will feel compelled to pick Havertz.

But finding a system that suits your game can be tricky and the player himself may need time to adjust.

“He’ll play like Frank has paid a lot of money for him, but where does he fit in a 4-3-3?” Carragher questioned.

“It almost looks like a number 10 and we don’t see much in football these days.

“Either he will have to be part of the front three in a wide position or he will have to be part of a midfield three and be the attacking player from the midfield.

“Certainly, where he played today, I don’t think it suits Chelsea.

“He may have liked to have played for Leverkusen in the false nine, but it will be a challenge to know where Chelsea are going to play with all these players.”
