Open champion Shane Lowry downplayed the “distance factor” in golf after a solid finish to his US Open at Winged Foot.
Lowry bogeyed the first three holes of his final round, but played the remaining 15 at one under par in difficult conditions to get a finish of 72 in the second major championship of the year.
“I think I got it right,” said Lowry, who will head straight to Galgorm Castle in Northern Ireland to headline the Dubai Duty Free Irish Open next week. “I was happier with my game than my score suggests.
“I’d say I played the best I could for three-quarters of the golf tournament. I played good golf the last two days, especially to get off to a bad start today and throw one under my last 15 holes out there.
“It’s so hard out there. I get frustrated watching the golf in the afternoon when I go home because every time I see people in the rough they’re hitting the greens, and every time I hit the rough I can’t seem to get close to the green. “.
Despite that assessment and the fact that heavy hitters Matthew Wolff and Bryson DeChambeau, the latter eventual six-hitter, were in the last group in the final round, Lowry doesn’t think distance is the key in golf.
“As long as the golf course is set up correctly, I don’t think distance is a big factor in the game,” Lowry said.
“Obviously, Bryson has done what he has done, but he did it (played well) for a month, and the last few weeks he hasn’t been incredible, he hasn’t competed at the top of events.
“Obviously Dustin (Johnson) hits far, but Dustin controls the ball very well and people have to realize that while they are probably some of the longest hitters in the world, they are still the best golfers.
“You still have to be able to control your ball, you still have to chip and putt. If it was just about hitting the ball long, long drivers would be here playing these big championships and not.
“I don’t like to talk about the distance debate because I think golf is perfect the way it is, and I think it’s a great game, and I think the best golfers are the best golfers in the world because they are the best golfers all around. “
