RESILIENT Newcastle West put an end to Na Piarsaigh’s dream of scoring a famous county double final in less than 24 hours by emerging victorious in a thrilling County Limerick intermediate pitch decider at the LIT Gaelic Grounds on Sunday afternoon.
Newcastle West posted a 1-24 to 1-22 success after extra time in sunny conditions.
Na Piarsaigh hoped to add the county intermediate title to the senior crown the Caherdavin so emphatically won on Saturday night.
The teams had finished tied 1-15 each at the end of normal time after Na Piarsaigh rallied from five points behind later to force extra time.
And the teams were 1-20 each at halftime in overtime.
Leading for most of the normal time, Newcastle West was duped into a comp-free stoppage time and stayed chasing the tie for the previous two tit-for-tat additional stints.

Like any ding-dong competition, the free-takers played a decisive role and while they lost an opportunity or two in vital moments, Diarmuid Moran Kelly and James Daly held their nerve to finish with equal scores of 1-11.
Scoring slowed in the second half of overtime, before Mark Kelly overtook the Magpies, Kieran Daly then leveled, tired legs failing to seize opportunities before Brian Nix gave Newcastle hope only for Daly to cancel with a free but with added time. To add time, Eoin Hurley restored his lead and Aaron McCarthy made sure of it before Mike Sexton’s whistle finally blew.
