Sam Bennett’s exultant wife, Tara, could not contain her exultant reaction to his epic victory in the Tour de France green jersey.
The 29-year-old Bennett dealt a serious blow to Irish cycling by sealing victory in the points standings in the famous race.
After watching Sam make history, Tara enthusiastically tweeted a photo of him celebrating, with the caption: “Someone pinch me. This can’t be real.”
Bennett beat world champion Mads Pedersen in a final sprint to claim his second Tour stage victory today, having completed the points classification in the intermediate sprint of the 122km Mantes-la-Jolie stage.
Green was the only qualification left to be decided today after Tadej Pogacar secured the yellow jersey on an epic Saturday, as well as the King of the Mountains polka dot jersey and the best young rider’s white jersey on his debut in the Tour.
An excited Bennett told reporters: “I can’t tell you how excited I am, green jersey, the Champs Elysees, I never thought I could win this stage.
“Doing it in green is so special and doing it on my Deceuninck-Quick-Step dream rig, the way the guys rode all day, they were fantastic.
“The feeling is so amazing, I can’t thank everyone enough.
“All the suffering through the mountains, it’s so worth it now. All the years trying to get ahead and trying to achieve it, it took me so long to get here … Sorry if I’m looking too arrogant but I’m going to enjoy every moment “.
Bennett married his wife Tara last year, a talented athlete in her own right, described as “a very talented high jumper and a good sprinter in track and field” in the Irish Times this week.
