Donny van de Beek lamented Manchester United’s heavy lifting after falling in a “really bad” home loss to Crystal Palace on his debut.
The 23-year-old midfielder arrived from Ajax for a fee amounting to £ 40m earlier in the month and left an immediate impression as he left the bench to score in his first appearance.
F365 early loser: Ed Woodward, witness to his own incompetence
But Van de Beek won’t remember his debut fondly, as Palace deservedly won 3-1 at Old Trafford, where Andros Townsend’s opening goal was complemented by a Wilfried Zaha double in the second half.
Performance highlighted the need for improvements, with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer asking for introspection after his players failed to meet expectations Saturday night.
“My first game for the club and then you want to win,” said Van de Beek. “It doesn’t matter how you want to win.
“I am really disappointed that we lost 3-1 at home. I think it’s really bad.
“Yes (we didn’t have as much match clarity as Palace) but last week in training we did very well.
“We train well, so my feeling was very positive. But, yes, today we play too slow.
“We were on the ball too long and I think that against an opponent like Crystal Palace it is necessary to speed up the game to create something. That was not good enough. “
Not only was Van de Beek candid in his assessment, but the Dutch international clearly did not take comfort in scoring on his debut.
“Playing for all the fans in stadiums like this is more beautiful to score,” he said.
“But I still scored but we lose and this is the most important thing, that we win.
“We lose, but it’s always very nice to play for a club like this.
“I played my first game and I hope to help the team and next time we win, for sure.”
United have very little time to recover as a trip to championship Luton in the third round of the Carabao Cup awaits them on Tuesday before next weekend’s Premier League game in Brighton.
“I mean, next week we have to step up and we have to win,” Van de Beek told MUTV. “Also for our sentiment, we have to step up now.”
