Racing 92 advanced to a Champions Cup semi-final against the Saracens by beating Clermont Auvergne 36-27 at Stade Marcel-Michelin on Saturday.

Louis Dupichot’s try in the third minute put the visitors ahead and Teddy Iribaren, having failed to convert, added the first two of six penalties he recorded throughout the game.

After Etienne Falgoux crossed to knock Clermont off the mark in the 25th minute, more penalties from Iribaren and a converted try from Francois Trinh-Duc put Racing 24-8 up at the break. Later, the advantage was extended thanks to two more penalties from Iribaren after the break.

Clermont showed a fight as Wesley Fofana and Kotaro Matsushima each produced attempts, both converted by Camille López, on either side of a Maxime Machenaud penalty to make Racing a 33-22 score in the 72nd minute.

Machenaud scored another penalty four minutes from time and Damian Penaud’s good late try for the hosts was only a consolation.

Racing will now play Saracens, who beat Leinster 25-17 at the Aviva Stadium on Saturday morning, a week from now at the Paris La Defense Arena.
