GARDAI launched an assault and public order investigation after a woman threw a milkshake at Leo Varadkar.
The Fine Gael frontman was attacked by a young girl with a skateboard while filming a video in Dublin’s Merrion Square around 3pm yesterday.
Gardai has launched an investigation into the incident, which has been viewed tens of thousands of times in a video uploaded online.
When asked about the attack, Leo said: “When I saw her coming towards me, at first I thought it was Avril Lavigne because she had the skateboard and everything, but unfortunately she wasn’t.
“She also had a shake that ended up all over my face and halfway up my suit, but look, I had a spare suit and just got on with the day’s work.
“I haven’t talked to the Gardai yet, but I think they want to talk to me, but it will be next week.”
The Tanaiste also clarified that it has a Garda driver but does not have security personnel and stated: “I don’t think a single incident would justify it.”
The Irish Sun may reveal that a detective inspector from the Pearse Street Garda station has been appointed under the command of Superintendent Joseph Gannon to investigate the incident.
STATEMENT
Gardai is also expected to take a statement to the film crew over the weekend.
After the attack, Gardai searched for the masked woman in the city center.
Officers have also urged the person who recorded the video to come forward.
As part of their investigation, officers are also tracking closed-circuit television cameras in the area to track the woman’s movements.
‘COWARD ATTACK’
A source told the Irish Sun: “This was a cowardly attack and the best thing this person can do is show up before the Gardai knocks on their door.
“No one deserves to be subjected to this type of behavior, no matter who they are.”
The attack caused outrage when it appeared online yesterday.
Former Fine Gael TD Noel Rock said, “Jesus, this is gross, regardless of your political point of view.”
And Labor MP Ged Nash said: “If you have something to say about how Ireland is run, show, defend, act, defend change and maybe even stand for election.
“I don’t care who you are or who you think you represent, but there is NO place for this behavior.”
Former presidential candidate Gavin Duffy said: “It could have been anything, including acid. We need to better protect our politicians. ”
