Leo Varadkar has spoken about his assault with a milkshake in Merrion Square.
Gardai will be investigating the incident, but the Tanaiste took it lightly and joked that he thought the attacker was singer Avril Lavigne, because she had a skateboard.
He said: “I was in Merrion Square earlier filming a video to explain to the people of Dublin some of the decisions that were made today.
“When I saw her coming towards me, at first I thought it was Avril Lavigne because she had the skateboard and everything, but she wasn’t.
“She also had a shake, which ended up all over my face and up to half of my suit, but I had a spare suit, so I got on with the day’s work.
“I have not spoken to the Gardai yet, but I think they will want to speak to me and will do so next week.”
Varadkar said he did not think he needed additional security due to this isolated incident.
Video footage emerged of the incident in which a young woman threw a drink at Mr Varadkar while filming this afternoon.
The footage, believed to be in Merrion Square, shows a woman approaching Varadkar before shooting him a drink.
The woman then proceeds to run out of the scene leaving the Fine Gael leader to clean himself up.
Gardai has confirmed that they are investigating the incident.
A Garda spokesperson said: “A Garda spokesperson told Dublin Live:” Gardaí is investigating an incident that occurred in Merrion Square today, 09/18/2020, at approximately 3pm. Investigations are ongoing. “
People on social media have widely condemned the attack, and many have said it is a step too far.
