Gardaí is investigating an incident during which a woman threw a milkshake on Tánaiste Leo Varadkar in Dublin city center on Friday.

In a video that circulated on social media, a woman holding a skateboard approaches Mr. Varadkar while recording an interview with a camera crew in Merrion Square.

The short video shows the woman walking towards the camera crew and pausing, before throwing a drink on the Fine Gael leader, and then turning and running.

Commenting on the incident, Mr. Varadkar said: “When I saw her coming towards me, I thought it was Avril Lavigne at first, because she had the skateboard.” A reference to pop star Avril Lavigne, known for her 2002 hit song Sk8er Boi.

“But unfortunately [she]I wasn’t and I also had a shake, which ended up all over my face and up to the middle of my suit, ”he said.

In a statement, a Garda spokesperson said that gardaí “are investigating an incident that occurred in Merrion Square today, 09/18/2020, at approximately 3 pm.”

Varadkar said he had been filming a video to explain the additional Covid-19 restrictions that will go into effect in Dublin on Friday.

“We finished it thankfully, and that will be published later tonight,” he said. “I had a spare suit and got on with the day’s work.

“I haven’t talked to the Gardaí yet, but I think they want to talk to me, but that will be next week,” he said.

Responding to questions about the level of security given to senior politicians, he said: “I still have a Garda driver, but I don’t have any security details as such, I don’t think an incident justifies it in all honesty.”

The Labor Party TD Aodhán Ó Ríordáin described the actions as “a blow out of order” and an example of “cowardly nonsense”.

In a post on Twitter, he said: “Ireland is a democracy where politicians are accessible and mingle freely with the people. If this is your way of expressing your point of view, you should reevaluate your argument, ”she said.
