Tánaiste Leo Varadkar has spoken about an incident earlier today when liquid was thrown on him while filming a video in Merrion Square, Dublin.
Gardaí said earlier that they were investigating the incident.
Images shared on social media show a woman with her face covered walking towards where Mr.
She is seen talking to one of the cameramen, before walking to the Tánaiste and throwing liquid from a Styrofoam cup in his face.
The woman then drops the cup and runs off.
“At first I thought it was Avril Lavigne when I saw this girl approaching with a skateboard and a shake,” Varadkar said when asked about the incident at a press conference tonight.
“I was in Merrion Square filming a video to explain the new restrictions to the people of Dublin, and the good news is that we finished it before the incident.”
The Tánaiste said that he had not yet spoken to Gardaí but added: “I think they want to talk to me.”
Mr Varadkar said he had a Garda driver, but no other security details. “I don’t think an incident should change that,” he said.
Gardaí on Pearse Street confirmed that they are investigating the incident.
They are examining the images and trying to identify the woman involved.
