The HSE told an elementary school in Co Kildare to close after several positive cases were identified.
Scoil Na Mainistreach in Celbridge received the orientation Thursday after the HSE conducted a series of tests.
It is believed that originally only a few students were sent home, but after testing a new outbreak was feared.
In a letter to the school principal, the HSE said: “Following today’s risk assessment, we recommend that the school close while the investigation is ongoing.
“We will stay in regular contact with you as additional test results come in.”
Students and school staff have been told to avoid school and public transportation, not have visitors in their homes, not to visit stores, and to stay away from vulnerable people.
Local Councilor Nuala Killeen said in a statement: “Following a risk assessment today as a result of several positive cases of Covid-19 Scoil Na Mainistreach in Celbridge has been closed pending an investigation.
“Any student who develops symptoms is advised to contact their primary care physician to request a test. In the meantime, and in accordance with procedure, all identified close contacts are encouraged to restrict their movements.
“Wishing all students and educators a speedy recovery.”
