Gareth Bale and Sergio Reguilón have been hired to fly in the same private jet from Madrid to London on Friday, where they are set to put the finishing touches on their transfers from Real Madrid to Tottenham.

Bale will arrive on loan for a year and will continue to earn his basic salary of 655,000 euros per week, with Real paying a percentage; the Welsh winger will become the highest paid player in the Premier League. Reguilón, the 23-year-old left-back who stood out on loan from Sevilla during their Europa League winning season last season, will join for € 30 million on a long-term contract.

Both players have already completed their medical exams in Madrid online with the Covid-19 guide.

Reguilón’s deal will bring the Spurs’ net spending on fees during this window to just over £ 50 million (€ 54.6 million); his other major purchases have been Pierre-Emile Højbjerg (£ 20 million) and Matt Doherty (£ 14.7 million).

But it is Bale who has really ignited the imagination of the club’s supporters, who need a boost after the terrible 1-0 home loss to Everton in the first weekend of the Premier League season. The 31-year-old became a hero during his first spell at Spurs from 2007-13 and is set to return as a four-time Champions League winner.

During his seven seasons at Real Madrid, Bale won 13 major titles, including two La Liga titles, and the Spurs hope they can bring his winning mentality to the locker room. The club’s last trophy was the Carling Cup in 2007-08; Bale was not on the team as he recovered from a serious ankle ligament injury. – Guardian
