The Department of Foreign Relations has updated the Government’s Green List of countries to which you can travel without having to restrict your movements upon return.
This list, which takes effect on Monday, September 21, includes seven destinations. These are Cyprus, Finland, Germany, Iceland, Latvia, Lithuania, and Poland.
Countries removed from the previous Green List include Estonia, Greece, Hungary, Italy, Norway, and Slovakia. However, you can still travel back from these countries until Monday without having to restrict your movements.
Some of the new Green List countries will not allow passengers from Ireland without meeting certain requirements. These are as follows:
Cyprus – Passengers must have proof of a negative Covid-19 test result, performed within 72 hours prior to take-off, in order to enter Cyprus.
Estonia – Tourists from countries with a certain level of infection (this includes Ireland at present) must complete a restriction period of 14 days upon arrival. You can pay for a coronavirus test to shorten this quarantine for € 67 on arrival.
Iceland – Passengers must complete a pre-registration form (at www.covid.is) before leaving for Iceland. Includes health declaration. All passengers must remain in quarantine for 14 days, unless you pay for a Covid-19 test on arrival and another after five days.
Latvia – All arrivals in Latvia must self-isolate for a period of 10 days if traveling from countries with an infection rate of more than 16 per 100,000 population (this includes Ireland).
Lithuania – Passengers wishing to travel here must fill out a form for their National Public Health Center. If you are traveling from Ireland, our high infection rate means you must have proof of a negative Covid-19 test result taken no more than 72 hours before arriving in Lithuania.
Aer Lingus has criticized the update saying that the Green List announced today does not represent a step towards alignment with the European Commission’s free movement proposal, as announced by the government on Tuesday.
“The implementation of that proposal would have seen the following countries retained on the list: Greece, Italy, Norway and Slovakia,” the airline said in a statement.
“He would also have seen the following countries added to the list: Bulgaria, Sweden, Slovenia, Denmark, the United Kingdom, Portugal, Belgium, the Netherlands, Austria, Luxembourg, Malta.”
The Department of Foreign Relations said the general advice remains that people should avoid non-essential travel, except to Green List countries (including Great Britain, but not Northern Ireland) where the advice is to take normal precautions.
From now on, the list will be updated weekly and will include countries with a 14-day cumulative number of Covid-19 cases per 100,000 of 25 or less, according to the most recent data from the European Center for Disease Prevention and Control. (ECDC).
Updates will be made every Thursday and changes will take effect the following Monday.
