Tanaiste Leo Varadkar Issues Green List Update After Big Council Change

Tanaiste Leo Varadkar has confirmed that people can visit Green List countries after a change in government advice.

Previously, politicians had advised against all non-essential foreign travel, even to countries that were officially on the “Green List.”

But now the leader of Fine Gael said that the Irish can visit several select countries for any reason, be it for holidays or to visit family.

He told RTE Prime Time: “Any country that has an incidence of less than 25 per 100,000 for 14 days is on the Green List, and that is a real Green List.

“By green we are saying that you can travel to those countries without any restrictions.

“Of course there is no risk, but these are all countries with a lower incidence of the virus than Ireland.”

And Mr Varadkar has admitted that the advice to avoid all non-essential travel has now been changed: “Yes, the Government advice has changed in that regard.

“If a country is on the green list, we are saying that it can go there without restrictions. That is your choice.

“Obviously, if your country is not on the green list that is different.

“In those areas that will be amber and red in the European traffic light system, there will be restrictions.”

Currently, the countries on the Green List are as follows:

  • Estonia
  • Finland
  • Greece
  • Greenland
  • Hungary
  • Italy
  • Latvia
  • Lithuania
  • Norway
  • Slovakia

However, the Tanaiste confirmed that this will be updated every Thursday for the next month, and Germany, Sweden and Poland are expected to join this list.
