Taoiseach Micheál Martin said last night at a meeting of the Fianna Fáil parliamentary party that the Covid-19 trends in Dublin are extremely serious.
There are strong indications that tomorrow the government could make a decision to tighten restrictions in the capital.
With the expectation that NPHET will make recommendations today, the next step in the process would be for the new Covid-19 monitoring group to consider the advice this afternoon.
This group is chaired by the Secretary General of the Government.
It will consider the broader social and economic impact of the recommendations.
Then on Friday, the special Cabinet Subcommittee Covid-19 is scheduled to meet.
This committee is chaired by the Taoiseach and also includes the Tánaiste, the Minister of Health, the Minister of Transport, the Minister of Finance and the Minister of Public Expenditure.
From their discussions tomorrow, the Cabinet is likely to make a final decision tomorrow night.
Micheál Martin told his party last night that raising the level of restrictions would be an important event and that the government’s focus will continue to be keeping schools open.
