Angry listeners flocked to complain to RTE about Jennifer Zamparelli’s proposed discussion about face masks.

The 2fm host was forced to scrap her plans to host the controversial segment on her radio show today after receiving a backlash online.

But RTE said 28 people still contacted them to complain about the item’s prospect on the 2fm show, while one complained that it didn’t take place.

A spokesperson for RTE said: “RTÉ, through the Information Office, was contacted by 28 members of the public who were not happy with the proposed issue.

“1 member of the public was unhappy that the article did not go through.”

Speaking on her 2fm show Tuesday, Jen said the decision to withdraw the segment at the end came after an ’emotional 24 hours’ that saw her engulfed in a wave of fury online.

It all started on Monday, when the Baldoyle native tweeted: “We are having an open discussion on my show… about face masks.

“Do you have strong opinions about using them or not using them? I would love to hear from you. Write me.”

But after a wave of abuse and criticism online, which criticized the planned segment as “irresponsible,” he announced that he had decided to pull the idea.

“It has been an exciting 24 hours,” he said.

“Yes, I posted a tweet without thinking about the words I used.

“I must say that the attention of my tweet was very, very different from what was interpreted.

“I wanted your reaction on the weekend.

“But I used the word ‘discussion’, and using the word ‘discussion’ on face masks … people assumed that I would be giving a platform to anti-maskers.

“And they were very upset and very angry, and I really need to clarify what was planned for today.”

She explained: “So we had booked a guest, a great guest who was going to speak about the psychology of why, in the face of a global pandemic, people refuse to wear masks against all medical advice or compassion for those around them. .

“These people still think they are above that.

“Who are these people? And why do they think they don’t have to wear one?

“I wanted to understand them because I wear my mask, I have been wearing my mask since before they were mandatory, and businesses have closed and people have gotten sick and people have died and the scenes over the weekend absolutely horrified me.

“So I took to Twitter to ask him what he thought.”
