The number of people receiving unemployment pay for the Covid-19 pandemic has dropped by almost 10,000 to 209,941 over the last week.
The Ministry of Labor Affairs and Social Protection said that in the last seven days 9,974 people had closed their claim for payment.
It said 7,457 people would receive their final payment under the scheme on Tuesday.
Social Protection Minister Heather Humphreys said on Monday that while the decline in the number of people receiving pandemic unemployment pay this week was welcome, “it is clear to all of us that Covid-19 is still active and may resurface in our communities. without prior notice”.
“As more companies prepare to reopen and schools and universities return, it is now more vital than ever that we take every possible precaution to protect ourselves, our families and our co-workers.”
May 5 high
The Department of Labor Affairs and Social Protection said the number of people receiving pandemic unemployment pay has now fallen by more than 64 percent from the peak of 598,000 reached on May 5.
He said the area that this week accounted for the highest number of people returning to work was the accommodation and food service activities sector with 1,304 people returning to work. The education sector followed with 1,091 people returning to work.
“The largest age cohort returning to work is in the 35-44 age group (1,869). They are followed by 1,566 in the category of 25 to 34 years and 1,537 of 45 to 54 years ”.
Three rates
The pay rates for the pandemic unemployment plan will change starting next week.
Starting September 17, the pandemic unemployment payment will change from two types of payment to three types of payment.
The department said the rate a recipient would receive would depend on the amount they previously earned.
“If they earned more than € 300 (gross) per week, now they will receive € 300 per week.
“If they were earning between € 200 and € 300 (gross) per week, the pandemic unemployment payment rate will now be € 250 per week; and if they earned less than € 200 (gross) per week, the pandemic unemployment payment rate will be € 203 per week (without changes in this rate) ”.
