Adam Idah had the best of scoring a late winner for Norwich City in the Championship on Saturday when the Canaries kicked off their season with a midfielder against Huddersfield.
But Norwich manager Daniel Farke revealed that he had a chance with the Republic of Ireland striker during the week in preparation for his first league game since relegation from the Premier League last season.
His goal came a week after the Cork native made his first appearances in Ireland for Bulgaria and Finland in the UEFA Nations League, in which he started.
And coincidentally, it was Finnish attacking partner Teemu Pukki who provided the assist against Huddersfield.
While Farke expressed his joy at the goal, he told the Norwich City YouTube channel that he and veteran Northern Irish goalkeeper Michael McGovern of Norwich had talks with the young forward midweek.
“Adam will be a little bit in the limelight and I’m delighted for him,” he said.
“I’m allowed to tell you a secret, I had a real fit with Adam Idah this week because I didn’t feel like he was focused on us.
“Of course it was difficult after being in the spotlight because he debuted for Ireland and during training I had a proper outburst with him and asked him for more focus and more discipline.
“And after training, I talked to Michael McGovern because as an experienced player, he always has an influence on the young guys and also after the game he said, ‘Listen, coach, I talked to Adam and I talked to him that he has to do it. Give me back. confident that you continue to choose him today, although he was not very good training this week.
“He had to pay and he did, big, big compliments, especially to the fringe players.”
