Former Republic of Ireland central defender Gary Breen has launched a cheap and misinformed dig into Celtic and Scottish football.
Breen was talking about Shane Duffy’s move to Parkhead after the loaned defender opened his Hoops account yesterday. Duffy led Celtic 3-0 early in the second half against Ross County in Dingwall to make his unforgettable debut.
However, for some strange reason, it attracted real criticism of Scottish football from Breen. The former Barnet and Sunderland defender told Off The Ball that Duffy moving to Scotland was “a concern” and that he could pick up “bad habits.”

Listen, I called him. If you don’t get double figures, I’ll be surprised. This is a brilliant play for Celtic, but the quality of the player they are playing against will be a major concern for Ireland.
“He is not going to face quality center forwards. There is no center forward in Scotland who plays for a Premier League team. None.
“You may get some bad habits [in Scotland]Not because he is lazy, but because he does not face quality center forwards. Even people like Virgil van Dijk came to Southampton from Celtic in horrible habits. He wouldn’t get to the right positions fast enough because he didn’t have to do it with Celtic. “

It’s not that Breen is trying to be disrespectful to Celtic here, he probably doesn’t even realize he’s doing it. However, what seems to him is someone who has never experienced Scottish football.

And it is clear that the great Celtic Chris Sutton was not happy either. He called his response “idiotic” when he mentioned it on his Twitter page:

For starters, Duffy comes to a club for the first time in his career that, no matter who you play, you must win. If anything, he will bring a winning mentality to that Irish setup, something that their current players hardly have at the moment.
Besides that, he will also try European football for the first time in his career. If Celtic reach the group stage of the Europa League, they could face some of the best forwards football has to offer. After all, Celtic wowed Lazio’s Ciro Immobile last season, the winner of the 2019/20 European Golden Boot.

To say that Duffy will pick up bad habits at a club that requires you to perform your best every week is simply an insult. If Breen was ever good enough to experience life at Parkhead, you will have known the demand placed on the club’s players.
This idea that Celtic should be almost honored that certain Premier League players want to sign for them is ridiculous. Many of the Premier League regulars have come here in the past and did not perform. Duffy will be tested to his limits here in a pressure-filled season.
But of course there is no point in preaching to those like Breen who are not interested in listening. He may have 64 appearances for Ireland (Transfermarkt), but when it comes to Scottish football, he clearly doesn’t know much.
In other news, Celtic boss Neil Lennon joked that the international will be eliminated after prompting him about a certain result last week.
