Search For A Song secured back-to-back renewals from Comer Group International Irish St Leger in Curragh, as former trainee champion Oisin Orr won the biggest race of his career.
It was a different story than 12 months ago, as while Search For A Song was leading a mile away this time under Chris Hayes, this time Orr took it offline and was the last to challenge deep into the last furlong. .
Andrea Atzeni must have felt confident when he struck up front over Roger Varian’s Ebor winner Fujaira Prince with everything else seemingly in trouble.
However, Orr had yet to ask everything of the filly, who had not won since her famous success last year, although she had run a flashy race when she was not defeated by Magical in the Tattersalls Gold Cup in July.
When her stamina began to hit close to home, it seemed inevitable that the 7-1 possibility would emerge and in the end she was a comfortable winner.
It closed a memorable day for Dermot Weld, who also won the Prix Vermeille with Tarnawa in Paris.
Weld, who coached the last consecutive Leger winner at Vinnie Roe, said: “It’s been a special day, especially when you win your ninth St Leger.
“I had a horse that won four in a row (Vinnie Roe), Vintage Crop won it twice and now so has she.
“I had trained her for the day for a long time, I also wanted that Group One to be over a mile and a quarter (black guy) so people wouldn’t think she was a staying mare.”
“You saw what the filly that beat her, Magical, did (in the Irish Champion Stakes), so I was calmly confident that she would win today.”
He continued: “I thought it was a lovely trip from Oisin Orr, the other day he is only 23 years old, but he turned it off beautifully and he was sure that when we returned home we would win.”
“It makes the horses relax really well. I have to be very fair to Chris Hayes as he rode her wonderfully last year too, they all have their own talents. I don’t really have a number one, but Oisin rides most of them. I accept it, I think he has wonderful hands and trusts the horses.
“When you win the Vermeille and the Leger on the same day with two fillies when you train 100 horses, which is a huge number in Ireland these days, yes, you still get a great kick.”
