Fans were blown away by a brilliant Seamus Coleman tonight as Everton dominated Tottenham Hotspur in their first Premier League match.
The Ireland captain impressed as a right-back in a 1-0 win in North London, while his Boys in Green teammate Matt Doherty made his Spurs debut.
While Doherty was preferred by new boss Stephen Kenny in the first games of the Irish Nations League earlier this month, it is Coleman who impressed fans today.
Headlines will ensure that striker Dominic Calvert-Lewin and new signings Allan and James Rodriguez get the applause, but the Donegal defender was the people’s choice for Man of the Match.
After the game, a fan said: “The new signings were all quality, but how good was Seamus Coleman?”
Another added: “Seamus Coleman, amazing. He seemed like the player who swept the Premier League seasons ago, before the big injury. Stuck on Son like glue, rarely leaving him time and space.”
Other fans compared the two right-backs, and the 31-year-old’s performance surpassed that of former Wolves player Doherty.
One fan asked: “How come Seamus Coleman is not in Ireland’s top 11?”
Another said: “I hope Stephen Kenny is watching this game! Without disrespecting Doherty, but Seamus Coleman was fantastic today.”
