José Mourinho has criticized his team for ‘lazily pressing’ after suffering a loss in their opening game against Everton.

Dominic Calvert-Lewin’s header in the 55th minute made the difference as Everton beat Spurs in the league for the first time since 2012.

Pickford played a major role in the Toffees victory, saving close opportunities from Dele Alli and Matt Doherty.

Speaking after the game, Mourinho said: “What happened after the goal with them having more chances is a consequence of conceding the goal and not so good physical condition of some players.

“What happened before the goal was a good game. We had two incredible situations and two good saves from Jordan Pickford. We did not score. The game was open.

“Against good teams like Everton, if you let them play from behind, they feel comfortable with very good technical players. If you don’t push them, you give them ammo.

“We were lazy in pushing. That is the consequence of a bad physical condition, a bad preseason. Some players didn’t even have preseason. Some players were in the wrong mood.

“It was too easy for them to play backwards.”

Spurs will now prepare for their next league game, away against Southampton on Sunday 20 September.

Before that, they will face the Bulgarian team Lokomotiv Plovdiv in the second qualifying round of the Europa League.

In the meantime, Everton will be very confident for their next league game against West Brom. New signings Allan, James Rodríguez and Abdoulaye Doucoure played an important role in the victory over the Spurs.

Before taking on Everton, they will play Salford City in the Carabao Cup on Wednesday 16 September.

In today’s other Premier League game, Leicester City beat West Brom 3-0. Talisman Jamie Vardy scored two goals from the penalty spot, while Belgian player Timothy Castagne scored on his debut.
