More than half of the 414 new Covid-19 cases confirmed over the weekend occurred in Dublin, where Gardaí is stepping up patrols to suppress large concentrations and ensure compliance with public health guidelines.
The health service confirmed on Sunday one more death from Covid-19, as well as 255 new cases.
The latest figures saw three deaths and 414 new confirmed cases between Saturday and Sunday, bringing the total number of cases to 31,000 and deaths to 1,784 to date.
Dublin accounted for more than half (56%) of the new confirmed cases over the weekend – 75 confirmed on
Saturday
and 156 confirmed on
Sunday
.
On Saturday, Acting Medical Director Dr. Ronan Glynn said Dublin was at a “critical juncture” in terms of the spread of the disease.
In response, the gardaí is increasing the number of foot, car and bicycle patrols around the capital, to ensure that the public adhere to social distancing, wear masks and other public health guidelines.
“There has been very good compliance with public health guidelines to date”Said Garda Deputy Commissioner, Police and Security, John Twomey.
“As a result, we will have a high-visibility presence throughout Dublin to support public health guidelines and regulations.”
Gardaí’s move follows a large protest on Saturday that saw thousands of people gather in the city center to demonstrate against ongoing public health restrictions and requirements to wear face masks.
