An innocent owner called emergency services after having a confrontation with the dead man.

Gardai investigating the death believes his attacker may have mistaken him for a thief.

A post-mortem examination was carried out today, but the results have not been published for operational reasons.

Investigators believe Kearney was assaulted at 3 a.m. after a resident of a nearby house heard a noise and mistook the victim for a burglar.

He was rushed to Mater Hospital after he fell and hit his head on the ground.

Local sources say that Kearney, who was from Cox’s Desmesne, was well known in the city of Dundalk, where he had been living and was the father of three children.

He had also been living in Tallaght but was originally from the Dublin 8 area.

‘REST IN PARADISE’

He had several prior convictions, including one for dangerous driving that resulted in death.

Kearney passed away before his father Hubert and his brother John, a youth and community worker, who died suddenly in 2017.

He is survived by his mother Attracta and his brothers Dean, Fra, Lorraine, Julie, Samantha, Michelle, nephews and nieces.

The tributes were shared online with a relative writing: “Rest in paradise, we will sadly miss you.”

Another tribute read: “Thinking of the entire Kearney family today. RIP Jason “.

GARDA APPEAL RENEWED

A Garda spokesperson said: “Gardaí investigators are renewing their appeal to anyone who has witnessed this incident to come forward.

“They are also attractive to any road user who may have camera images (including dash cam) of the area at that time to make available to them.

“Anyone with any information is asked to contact the Store Street Garda station incident room on 01666 8000, the confidential Garda line on 1800 666 111 or at any Garda station.”

To date no arrests have been made in the case, but Gardaí is following a defined line of investigation.

Sinn Fein’s local TD for Louth, Ruairi O Murchu, said: “One hit attacks, it’s tragic when it happens and it happens too easily and people have to be incredibly careful.

“No matter what the situation is, there is a tragedy for some family involved in this.

“Anyone with any information would have to appear before the gardai.”
