A man who died in a single hit assault has been named locally as Jason Kearney, of Dundalk in Co Louth.
Kearney, who was almost 40 years old, was attacked in the early hours of Wednesday morning in Seville Place, Dublin 1.
After the attack, he was taken to Mater Hospital, where he was pronounced dead on Saturday morning.
An autopsy was carried out yesterday, but the results have not been published for operational reasons.
Local sources say that Kearney, who was from Cox’s Desmesne, was well known in the city of Dundalk and was the father of several children.
He had several prior convictions, including one for dangerous driving that resulted in death.
Kearney passed away before his father Hubert and his brother John, a youth and community worker, who died suddenly in 2017.
He is survived by his mother Attracta and his brothers Dean, Fra, Lorraine, Julie, Samanatha, Michelle, nephews and nieces.
The tributes were shared online with a relative who wrote: “Rest in paradise, we will sadly miss you.”
Another tribute read: “Thinking of the entire Kearney family today. RIP Jason “.
A third added: “Very sad. RIP Jason, condolences to his family and friends. “
Louth TD Ruairi O Murchu told Dublin Live: “One hit attacks, it’s tragic when it happens and it happens too easily and people have to be incredibly careful.
“No matter what the situation is, there is a tragedy for some family involved in this.
“Anyone with any information would have to appear before the gardai.”
An investigation is under way into the incident and all the circumstances surrounding the death.
No arrests have been made at this time, but Gardai says they are following a defined line of investigation.
