Celtic rookie Shane Duffy has been warned that he is at risk of losing his place in the Irish team because he plays in Scotland.
The defender scored on his debut for the Hoops in Ross County, but former Republic of Ireland star Gary Breen is concerned about his level, The Daily Record reports.
Breen, who has won 63 games for his country, believes Duffy will reach double figures in goals this season because of who he’s up against, but insists he won’t be tested at all.
And he has sensationally claimed that not a single Scottish Premiership striker would make an English Premier League team.
He told Off The Ball: “If you don’t score double figures, I’ll be surprised.
“For Celtic, I think he’s a brilliant signing and could become a club legend this 10-in-a-row season.”
“This is a brilliant play for Celtic, but the quality of the player they are playing now will be a big concern for Ireland.
“He is not going to be facing quality center-forwards. There is no center-forward in Scotland who plays for a Premier League team. None.
“He is going to play against a lower quality and that is a concern.”
Breen didn’t stop there and also claimed that Duffy would downgrade as well and insists that Virgil van Dijk moved to England with bad habits because he played in Scotland.
He considers that the Liverpool defender, who is now believed to be the best center-back in the world, would regularly make positional errors because he didn’t need to be top-class in Scotland.
He added: “If you consider that he has played in the Premier League, he was playing against first-rate forwards there the whole time. He can face these players.
“I could pick up some bad habits [in Scotland]Not because he is lazy, but because he does not face quality center forwards.
“Even people like Virgil van Dijk came to Southampton from Celtic with horrible habits. He wouldn’t get into the right positions fast enough because he didn’t have to with Celtic.”
