A heroic pharmacist helped save a woman’s life with quick Epipen intervention to stop a potentially fatal allergic reaction.
Clodagh Victory was hailed by her employer Remedi Pharmacy at the Dublin IFSC after a woman broke into the store on Wednesday with swollen lips, a swollen throat and difficulty breathing.
Calm Clodagh, who was on duty at the time, administered the life-saving dose after quickly springing into action.
The Trinity College graduate had just returned from Australia and had recently started her new job at Custom House Square.
He was filling prescriptions in the back of the store Wednesday when a lady walked into the store asking for an antihistamine.
“I tend to always be on the lookout for what’s going on in the front of the store,” he told Dublin Live.
“I noticed a girl asking about Piriton but she sounded quite stressed.
“I went out to ask if everything was okay and she seemed panicked.
“He told me that he had a peanut allergy and that he had eaten a piece of cake that had some in it.
“I asked her to remove the mask. Her lips and throat were swollen and she had difficulty breathing.”
Clodagh had his manager Aneta quickly call an ambulance and let them know it was an anaphylactic emergency.
Staying calm, he then brought the scared woman over and gave her the crucial injection.
“I took the young woman to the consulting room and gave her the Epipen, assuring her that everything would be fine,” he recalls.

“She was in extreme shock and panic at this stage.
“She reacted well to the first dose and her breathing started to improve.”
The ambulance arrived about 15 minutes later, where paramedics gave the woman intravenous steroids and transferred her to hospital.
The grateful ambulance staff returned to the store half an hour later to personally congratulate Clodagh and the other staff members, informing them that they probably saved the woman’s life.
And thankfully, the woman was able to recover and contacted the pharmacy the next day to thank them.
“It was a complete team effort between the entire staff,” Clodagh said.
“Everyone was calm and followed all the correct procedures.
“The young woman contacted us the next morning to inform us that she was back home and that she was fine.”
The reality of the situation didn’t really understand Clodagh initially, who simply went back to business after all the fuss was over.
However, she was touched and grateful for all the positive messages that she and the pharmacy have received in the days following her intervention.
“A pharmacist can be a demanding, high-pressure job at best,” he said.
“I refilled the prescriptions for the rest of the patients waiting at the pharmacy and I really didn’t have a chance to take in what had happened until I got home that night.
“That’s when I realized that I had saved someone’s life by acting so quickly in the situation, staying calm and following procedures.”
“I am delighted with all the messages that I have received and would like to especially thank Aneta, John and all the Remedi staff for welcoming me to their lovely team.
“It’s kind of overwhelming to see all the positive messages out there.”
