A senator from Fianna Fáil says there is real fear along the border over the British government’s plans to change the Brexit Withdrawal Agreement.
British Prime Minister Boris Johnson is trying to get his MPs to back controversial legislation next week that could violate international law.
Former British Prime Ministers John Major and Tony Blair have written a joint article in the Sunday Times telling him to scrap his controversial bill.
Sen. Erin McGreehan says it’s a troubling time for those who live on the border.
“I have great concerns. Living here in a border constituency like Louth, it is crucial that we see the Withdrawal Agreement amended in its entirety,” Senator McGreehan said.
“We see this week that the UK government wants to circumvent an agreed international agreement.
“Of course, everyone throughout the border region and in the north is incredibly worried and angry that this is the situation.”
Brexit spokesman for the Social Democrats, Cian O’Callaghan, hopes that British MPs will go against Boris Johnson’s bill.
“Probably our best hope on this is that we see some of the Conservative MPs saying that they will rebel against Boris Johnson on this and that they will seek to amend his bill.
“They are saying that they will not tolerate the UK breaking international law.”
