The Republic of Ireland striker came home nine minutes from time at John Smith’s Stadium after Teemu Pukki pounced on a poor backward pass from Richard Stearman.

Bournemouth began its Championship life with a dramatic 3-2 win over Blackburn in new coach Jason Tindall’s first game in charge.

Arnaut Danjuma finally killed the Rovers with six minutes remaining with a magnificent blow at Vitality Stadium.

Blackburn had returned two shots to equalize after strikes by Jack Stacey and Jefferson Lerma with the efforts of Bradley Johnson and Adam Armstrong.

Mark Travers started in goal for Bournemouth, while Darragh Lenihan and Derrick Williams were a central defensive pair for the Rovers.

It was a different story for Aitor Karanka, who celebrated a 1-0 win over Brentford in his league arc as Birmingham’s manager at St Andrew’s.

Jeremie Bela headed in the only goal eight minutes before halftime when the Bees, who hit the post through Josh Dasilva, suffered a hangover from last season’s promotion.

Veljko Paunovic, now free from quarantine requirements, also enjoyed his first match as Reading boss, as he won 2-0 in Derby.

The goals came in the last stages of the first half. Lucas Joao claimed the first before becoming a supplier, with a clever heel back, for Ovie Ejaria to score in his first appearance since making his permanent loan to Liverpool.

Both goals came in the first half with Josh Windass opening the score in the fourth minute and Jordan Rhodes doubling just before the break.

Bristol City scored the fastest goal of the day, but took a goal from Tomas Kalas in the 82nd minute to secure a 2-1 home win over promoted Coventry.

The Robins got off to an impressive start when Jamie Paterson scored in the first minute, but Matt Godden tied in the 33rd minute. A tight game was resolved when Kalas headed the winner from a Paterson corner.

There was belated drama in the clash of the other two promoted teams at Adams Park.

Michael Ihiekwe led an injury time victory as Rotherham snatched the victory from Wycombe, who was playing their first ever game at this level.

Morgan Gibbs-White, on loan from the Wolves, made an immediate impact on their Swansea league debut with the only goal in a 1-0 win at Preston.

QPR knocked out Nottingham Forest 2-0 after a Lyndon Dykes penalty and an Ilias Chair effort in the final minute, while Millwall and Stoke drew goalless.
