She will host the show alongside regular host Daithi O’Se when Maura announced she would be taking a step back.

Sinead will host the show on Mondays and Tuesdays and Maura will host the rest of the week.

Maura revealed that she wanted to spend more time with her family, especially her son Cal.

The RTE presenter spoke to the Irish examiner and said, “I wanted to make time for Cal. I’ve been doing this for eight years and it’s time to step back and put family first.

FAMILY TIME

“I’ve been on live TV since 1996 and on afternoon TV for 11 years. It’s time to take a little break.”

Maura went on to say that RTE was very understanding of the new move and said it feels like the right time for change.

She continued: “RTE was great, they really were. I love the show, it’s my baby. I’ve always been very career oriented, but it feels like a natural moment for a change, it feels organic.

“Cal is getting into older babies. I want to pick him up from school to do his homework. At this age, I’m his friend, I’m his everything.”

“I have nothing to prove to anyone, and not just to other people, but to myself.”

Sinead talked about her new role on RTE and said she was “excited” to star in the chat show.

‘VERY EXCITED’

She said: “I am very excited to join Today. Maura, Dáithí and the whole team have been very welcoming and I can’t wait to get started now.

“The show is well loved and I look forward to bringing something extra this season.”

Daithi also spoke about the new addition to the Today team, saying that everyone was “delighted” to have her.

He explained: “We are really delighted to have Sinéad on board with us.

“I think it’s made for the show. It’s season 9 and it’s a good time to turn things around.”
