Manchester United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has confirmed that Harry Maguire will continue as the club’s captain for the new season.
Maguire received a suspended sentence of 21 months last month, having been convicted of assaulting a police officer, swearing, resisting arrest and bribery during an incident in Mykonos.
He has denied the crimes and launched an appeal. The appeal overturns the verdict and means that Maguire has no criminal record before a full new trial.
“He has handled it very well and of course I will be here to support him,” Solskjaer told United’s official website.
“He is going to be our captain. We will let Harry and his people and the process run. “
Maguire was removed from the England team for last week’s Nations League double game against Iceland and Denmark.
Solskjaer said: “Of course Harry, as you said, had a difficult summer. He didn’t have a long break.
“His rest was different from the others, since we gave him a few more days and, afterwards, he has returned and looks good.
“To me, he is a superior human being, absolutely superior and has always been a positive guy with the right values. So I really hope we can see Harry in his prime. “
England manager Gareth Southgate plans to bring Maguire back to England’s setup next month for the friendly with Wales and the Nations League double-game with Belgium and Denmark.
Southgate initially included Maguire in his squad for the Iceland and Denmark matches, but later withdrew him hours later following the conclusion of his court case in Syros.
Maguire went on vacation to Mykonos after United’s season ended with a Europa League semi-final loss to Sevilla in Cologne.
Maguire, 27, became the world’s most expensive defender when he joined United from Leicester for £ 80 million in August 2019.
He was named captain of the United club in January following Ashley Young’s departure for Inter Milan.
Maguire played in every minute of United’s 38-game Premier League campaign, becoming the first outfield player to do so for the club since 1995.
