To say that Erin’s own are determined would be an understatement. They just never give up.
We’ve seen it in the group stage, and again tonight in these Co-Op Superstores Cork Premier SHC quarterfinals in Páirc Uí Chaoimh. The homeless did not know how to lose. They brought the game to the favorites, and while this derby game never caught fire, it won’t matter in the least for Martin Bowen’s side.
There was very little to separate them, tied nine times, but Eoghan Murphy’s tenth point in injury time put Erin’s Own into a semi-final with Glen Rovers.
The fierce defense to the death also meant that Sarsfields was unable to get an equalizing or even winning score. Twice they bravely denied Sars: first Cormac Dooley and then James O’Flynn. In the midst of all this, we also saw another surprising hurley change (similar to Cáit Devane) when O’Flynn received a replacement hurley from the band.
Tied six times in the first half, Erin’s Own was two points clear at the break, 0-10 to 0-8. And deserving of the advantage of having enjoyed a productive second quarter.
Within seconds of departure, Daniel Kearney had to momentarily shut down as a blood sub. Meanwhile, Erin’s Own scored the first two points from dead ball specialists Murphy and Robbie O’Flynn.
Sarsfields struck back through Liam Healy and Aaron Myers. This trend continued as Sarsfields advanced to the front on the breakwater, 0-5 to 0-4, courtesy of two impressive points from Jack O’Connor and Myers.
The teams were tied 0-7 apiece when Erin’s Own edged out Sarsfields in the race until halftime with Murphy’s three points from free practice. Also, they had a very good scoring chance, but Cian O’Callaghan was brought down by Sarsfields goalkeeper Alan Kennedy, the free result converted by Murphy.
Liam Healy scored a late point after he was cheated by Daniel Hogan.
In the second half, Sarsfields returned to the fight when the younger Hogan threw the sliotar at the net in the 39th minute; before that, they threw three wide shots to put the nose in front, 1-10 to 0-12.
Erin’s never-dying attitude saw them come together and lead by two. Sarsfields leveled through Cian Darcy and Paul Leopold. It was a hectic ending, but they held out in dramatic fashion with Murphy shooting the winner.
