The children were “distraught, screaming and crying” after their double-decker school bus collided with a railroad bridge and fell off the roof.

Three students were taken to hospital with “serious but not fatal” injuries and 12 others suffered minor injuries in the accident in Winchester, England, this morning.

Inspector Andy Tester of the local highway police unit said 57 other children on the bus and the driver were unharmed.

All of the youth on board the bus operated by Stagecoach were between the ages of 11 and 16.

Insp Tester told the Palestinian Authority news agency: “When officers and other emergency services arrived, they found several people exiting the bus and it was clear that the bus had collided with the bridge.”

“So we got everyone off the bridge and evaluated all of their injuries.

“The children were very, very distressed, they had obviously been in a very traumatic incident. Several of them were injured, it was a very difficult scene to handle.”

Robert, a 15-year-old student at Henry Beaufort School, was on the bus when the accident occurred.

The student, who did not want to reveal his last name, told PA: “I was downstairs. I was on my phone when it really happened, we went under the tunnel and I heard a crash.

“It took me a little while to realize what was happening … part of the roof fell off the side of the bus I was on.

“I waited for the people on the upper deck to get off, and at that point I saw some of the serious injuries that people had. I think they were all in shock.”

He added: “When we got off the bus, everyone sat on the grassy shore outside, people started to panic and called parents, some people started crying.

“It took like an hour maybe while everyone was sorted until we started to leave.”
