GARDAI has opposed the renewal of a license for a pub on Achill Island for “constantly ignoring” Covid-19 regulations, in one of the first such cases.

In today’s session of the Achill District Court, Inspector Denis Harrington complained to Judge Fiona Lydon about what he said were “continuing violations” of Covid-19 legislation at Ted Lavelle’s tavern on the island of Co Mayo. .

Insp Harrington said the DPP has ordered prosecution for one infraction and a decision is pending on a second.

He said Ted’s owner, Mr. Joseph Fadian, “constantly ignored” the advice of local Gardai and the objection is “a last resort.”

He called for the case to be postponed until November, adding that if Mr. Fadian “changes his way” in two months, the matter “may not bother the court.”

The defense attorney said his client feels he is complying and that there is a “difference of opinion” with the police on the matter.

Judge Lydon said the state has been “more than reasonable” and advised the attorney to have a “discussion” with his client.
