Tanaiste Leo Varadkar has said that certain types of restrictions could be implemented if the numbers continue to rise.
The Fine Gael leader said Dublin and Limerick could follow the measures implemented in Glasgow, where social visits to homes were limited.
However, he said that the effect on people’s mental health due to another blockage is something to be aware of.
Speaking at Newstalk Breakfast, the Tanaiste said: “If we have to act, we will act … but we will not act without good cause.”
“I have a real concern about the impact on businesses and jobs of the new restrictions.

“The idea of restricting home visits in Dublin and other cities is an option that we will have to consider if the numbers continue as they are.”
On Tuesday, the Health Department confirmed a total of 307 new cases, the largest daily increase since May 14.
However, the Tanaiste also said that the government would like to allow more essential travel before Christmas.
Mr. Varadkar added: “We would like to allow more essential travel, perhaps allow some people to see their relatives this Christmas.
“You’ll see at Heathrow they are testing tests that get results in a few minutes.”
