An 80-year-old man who disappeared for more than two days on a walking trip to the Yorkshire Dales turned up just as his family and police were meeting for help.

Harry Harvey of Tynemouth was reported missing on Sunday after he went missing while on an organized walking tour in Upper Swaledale on Saturday.

Police officers, mountain rescue volunteers and an RAF search and rescue team spent two days searching for Mr. Harvey in the area around the famous Tan Hill Inn, which, at 1,732 feet (528 m) above the level of the sea, is the highest pub in Britain.

But, yesterday afternoon, she was found by a wildlife photographer who had seen appeals and noticed Harvey greeting her, police said.

She then reunited with her family who had gathered at the pub to make an emotional appeal for help, telling them how she had camped out after parting ways.

North Yorkshire Police said he was safe and sound despite showing up with a bandage on his head.

Inspector Mark Gee said: “It is fantastic news that Harry has been found safe and sound.

“I want to thank all the search volunteers for their time, as well as the rangers, farm owners, farmers and local residents for their help and understanding.

“Thanks also to Tan Hill, who took care of the volunteers and Mr. Harvey’s family.”

Mr. Harvey was reported missing at 1.30pm Sunday and police said they thought he was probably lost during the package trip.

Officers said he was an experienced hiker wearing camping gear, but they were very concerned about his age and the bad weather.
