An immunology expert has called for the removal of GPs from the Covid-19 testing process in a bid to speed up the process.
Dr Tómas Ryan, from the Faculty of Biochemistry and Immunology at Trinity College Dublin, told RTÉ Radio’s Morning Ireland that if patients who had symptoms could call a 24/7 phone line a week, they could get a referral and be cleaned within 12 hours instead of waiting to speak to a doctor. GP.
Dr. Ryan also warned of the challenges of imposing local restrictions in an area as large as County Dublin.
“Localized restrictions worked well in Kildare, Laois and Offaly because of the good faith of the residents.
“It would be more challenging in Dublin due to the large number of people who have to move around the city to go to school and work.”
While he was surprised by the daily figure Tuesday of more than 300 new cases of the virus, Dr. Ryan said people shouldn’t be alarmed as no one day can reveal much due to inconsistencies in the testing rate on any given day. .
“The reopening of schools, universities and pubs at the same time as the numbers increase was cause for concern,” he said.
Dr. Ryan noted that the local restrictions are an emergency measure and are not in line with the proposed plan to suppress the virus.
He said he expects a more direct and coherent message.
It is too early to see the impact of the reopening of schools, he said, the cases in children so far are from outside of schools, but there is still a risk of spread.
Dr. Ryan also warned that there will be setbacks in developing a vaccine and that a strategy that does not depend on a vaccine is needed in the next six months.
