They order the closure of the cork business due to ‘serious and immediate danger to public health’

The Irish Food Safety Authority ordered the closure of a cork company, describing its facilities as a “serious and immediate danger to public health” after an inspection.

Khan Spices on North Main Street was ordered to close on August 21 after the inspector noted a number of hygiene issues that posed a danger to the public.

The store was closed for several days before they were given the go-ahead to do business again on August 25.

Problems such as infrastructure, lack of hot water, clotted blood on the shelves and the lack of guarantee of effective pest control were some of those raised by the inspector.

The FSAI also noted that there was no evidence of food safety control or food temperature monitoring in the store.

The closure order states that there were a large number of flies in the facility that were seen landing on meat products, counter surfaces and containers.

The pest control bait boxes were not accessible and there was also an electric fly killer on the property that was not working at the time of inspection.

There were also problems with the structure and maintenance of the building, including peeling paint on the warehouse walls and a piece of wood that had fallen from the inside of the staff door.

The report detailed that the company had not supplied hot water to any of the sinks and that the hot water unit was turned off at the time of the inspection.

Other reasons the FSAI gave for the closure included a buildup of dirt and clotted blood on the shelves, the walls and freezers were found to be dirty, and a window area was littered with cobwebs and dead insects.

Lack of personal hygiene for staff was another issue, as no liquid soap or paper towels were found in the staff bathroom or near the sink in the butchery area.

The clerk working the butcher’s counter was also not wearing outer protective clothing and some of the meat being used was past its expiration date.
