Dublin GAA: Tony Broughan’s funeral sees the streets of Cabra turn blue in his final farewell

The streets of Cabra were covered in blue this morning as family, friends and fans headed to the funeral of Dublin superfan Tony Broughan.

Tony was famous to Dublin fans and players for supporting the team across the country for 80 years, and was able to witness the Dubs snatch the infamous five in a row in their final year of attending games.

The procession, which was organized by Dublin GAA supporters, traveled from their home on Carnlough Rd in Cabra to the Church of the Precious Blood for their funeral mass.

Among the mourners was the local leader of TD and Sinn Fein, Mary Lou McDonald, and the Sam Maguire cup was brought to the church next to Tony’s coffin.

A poster dedicated to Tony and carried by Dublin fans read “Sorry I had to go, but I’ve seen it all, the 50s, 60s, 70s, 80s, 90s and five in a row. Time to say goodbye and be with my wife.

“Good luck to all the GAA fans and thank you for the happiness you gave me. I am here in heaven watching you.

“Hill 16 is just Dublin.”

Hill 16 icon Tony, who dressed as Molly Malone in the Dubs games for decades, sadly passed away last Wednesday.

A former employee of the Dublin corporation, he had claimed the famous phrase “I’m going to die on the hill”, such was his devotion to the Dubs.

He died before his loving wife Rose, and his daughters Rosemary, Patricia, Audrey, Martina, Jacinta, and sons Anthony, Terry and Kenneth miss him sadly.

He will also be fondly remembered by his fellow Dublin fans, along with club members Naomh Fionnbarra GAA, Handball Alley and their friends at the Sing Along club on Sunday night.
