A poignant image of an elderly man using an alarm clock in a pub has sparked sadness and anger over government restrictions against the coronavirus.
The rules of the pandemic in bars mean that there is a limit of 105 minutes, one hour and 45 minutes, to sit and eat and drink in an establishment.
However, advance booking and limited time slots of 105 minutes are not required if a physical distance of two meters is strictly maintained.
But one man took the restrictions very seriously, using an alarm clock to time his stay so that he took as little risk as possible while still enjoying a pint and a bite.
The photo, taken at McGinn’s Hop House in Galway, shows him settling down with a half-empty Guinness and a hearty meal on the table across from him, as well as the clock, as he gazes out the window.
McGinn posted the image on his Facebook page and added: “The poor thing is worried that he has stayed (sic) the 90 minutes.”
Kieran O’Malley also tweeted the photo and said: “I can’t … this little old man has an alarm clock on the table so he won’t stay more than 90 minutes at McGinns in Galway …”
He later added, “So many lovely comments here … I just called McGinns and left a few pounds behind the bar for the man who called Finbarr on behalf of all the lovely people here.”
The shooting sparked sad and angry comments from people on social media as they attacked restrictions that were “marginalizing and isolating” the elderly.
Ciaran Murphy said in the original Facebook post: “We should ask all members of the government to comment on this photograph and see what they are doing to older people across the country. Hit the soft targets, ignore the real issues. I hope you are proud of yourselves. “
Karen Murphy added: “My heart goes out to the older generation who live in fear on all levels … may they enjoy their few pints.”
Marianna McGrath posted: “A picture paints a thousand words, how sad that this man cannot enjoy his few pints without having to worry about time !!”
Mike Grealish said, “Poor devil, this useless government has the scared life of the previous generation.”
Ann Massey added: “All my 86-year-old uncle wanted was to have a little company, place some bets at Paddy Power and have a little bite in town. That was his life. He killed himself in June. The government doesn’t protect the elderly, marginalizes and isolates them.
Evelyn Barrett Maye said: “Heartbreaking photo. Old people living in fear because a boy in an office chose the 90 minute and 9 euro numbers of his A ###. All the drama around covid is not only scary for many … It’s cruel. “
