Dermot Desmond’s ‘Ballymun Towers South Dublin’ label for ex-RTÉ land plan marked ‘amazing’

A ‘Ballymun Towers South Dublin’ tag affixed by billionaire Dermot Desmond to Cairn Homes’ € 338 million apartment plan for former RTÉ land in D4 “creates a stigmatization that is completely unjustified” for the development.

This is according to Cllr James Geoghegan (FG), who was just one of several Fine Gael Dublin city councilors who criticized the Ballymun label placed on the development by Mr. Desmond at a Council Dublin South East area meeting to consider the Cairn ‘Plan for the Montrose project.

An Bord Pleanala is due to make a decision on the plan next week after the Supreme Court last Friday cleared the way for a decision after rejecting a challenge from Desmond’s wife Pat Desmond and two other Ailesbury residents. Rd.

In a lengthy report, Dublin City Council planners recommended to An Bord Pleanala that the building permit be granted.

However, elected council members are divided over the plan.

Desmond wrote to councilors in June where he stated that the 611 apartment plan is similar to ‘Ballymun Towers South Dublin’.

Cllr Geoghegan, who is in favor of the Cairn app, told the meeting that it was “very unfortunate” that Desmond used the Ballymun phrase when referring to the development of Cairn.

Cllr Geoghegan stated that Mr. Desmond’s letter contained “reasonable criticisms” of the Government’s fast-track plan legislation under which the Project Montrose plan has been submitted.

Cllr Paddy McCartan (FG) also criticized Desmond’s characterization of the proposed “Ballymun towers”. Cllr McCartan claimed that this was a “pejorative reference” as Ballymun was built in the 1960s consisting of 36 blocks. Cllr Danny Byrne (FG) described the reference to Ballymun as “incredible.”

He said the development is one of the best, if not the best, that Dublin has seen. He said: “This is an absolutely fantastic development in a brilliant location.”

However, Cllr Mannix Flynn (Ind) said at the meeting that he has big problems with the proposal in terms of height and wind tunnel. He said: “There is a comparison between the development and the Ballymun towers.”

The Ailesbury Rd Residents Association is one of the parties objecting to the Cairn plan and Cllr Pat Dunne (Independents4change) said at the meeting: “Let the millionaires of Ailesbury Rd get the message that your concerns, your concerns don’t they are the concerns of most of the people of this city. “

He said: “Our concerns are related to homelessness, homelessness, the thousands of families living in overcrowding decisions.” Cairn Homes plans to sell 61 of the apartments in the plan to the city council for € 30 million to fulfill the social housing obligations of Part V and Cllr McCartan stated that this equates to € 500,000 per apartment on average “and it is something that I do not do. ”. I think it is sustainable ”.

He said: “I don’t think it’s good value for money and paying 500,000 euros for an apartment is not sustainable.”
