Gardaí interviewed a prime suspect in the run-over murder of Thiago Cortes in Dublin last week after a teenager from the city center came forward for questioning.
The suspect, who is a minor, was known to the Gardaí and was considered a suspect in the crime after his name emerged during contacts between the investigating Gardaí and members of the local community.
Since then, the boy has reported to Store St Garda station and been interviewed under caution about his alleged involvement in the murder of Mr. Cortes, who was riding a bicycle at the time.
Gardaí suspects that the boy was the driver of the car, but that other teenagers were also in the vehicle, all from the same north Dublin city center community where the victim died.
Mr. Cortés (28) died after being hit by a speeding car on North Wall Quay last Monday around 10:30 pm The driver of the car then sped away from the scene and then abandoned the vehicle.
Investigation criminal
Mr. Cortés, who was from Brazil, was delivering food by bicycle for Deliveroo at the time he was hit by the car and had started work a few weeks before he was killed.
He was still alive at the scene when emergency services arrived and was treated by paramedics. Later, Mr. Cortés was taken by ambulance to Mater Hospital for further medical treatment, but despite efforts to save him, he died in the hospital on Wednesday, September 2.
Immediately after the accident occurred, Gardaí launched a major criminal investigation, which has intensified in the days that have elapsed since the death of Mr. Cotes. Within a few days, gardaí from Store St were confident of knowing the identity of the driver.
While the suspect was interviewed on Wednesday under caution, meaning the answers to questions are used as evidence in a case, he was not arrested, although the Gardaí can arrest him at any time if he wishes. If you had been arrested when you showed up, arresting you again in the future could be problematic, as new evidence would be required.
In response to questions, Garda headquarters said: “Gardaí on Store Street have not made any arrests in connection with the fatal traffic collision at North Wall Quay on Monday, August 31, 2020. Investigations are ongoing.”
Scrap
Up to three other people, believed to be teenagers, are believed to have been in the car with the driver at the time of the hit-and-run and Gardaí believes they know their identities.
Gardaí impounded a car in Castleforbes Square in Dublin’s north city center shortly after the fatal hit and run and they believe that vehicle was the vehicle that struck Mr. Cortés.
It appears that the car, which was actually junk, had been purchased by local teenagers and was being driven erratically before the accident.
The vehicle was captured at various locations on CCTV systems in the northern city center, including around the time of the fatal accident last Monday night. A well-attended vigil was held in Dublin last Wednesday in honor of Mr. Cortés, who had recently become engaged in Dublin.
