The car that collided with the innocent cyclist Thiago Cortes was bought a few hours before the collision.
On Sunday, The Irish Sun may reveal that the 2005 Ford Focus was bought by the four young men, who were in the vehicle, from a man in the north of the capital on Monday afternoon.
Investigators at the Store Street Garda station are now tracking the car’s movements on CCTV around the city before it collided with Deliveroo driver Thiago, 28, on North Wall Quay around 10.30pm that night.
Thiago was later taken to Mater Hospital but lost his fight for life on Wednesday morning.
Detectives, who yesterday held a conference on the tragedy, also spoke with the 16-year-old alleged driver after he showed up, but he has not been arrested.
We can also reveal that his name was released to officers by community members outraged by the tragedy.
DO NOT DELIBERATE
Gardai is satisfied that the driver of the vehicle, who had no tax, insurance or NCT, did not deliberately enter Thiago.
Instead, they believe the collision occurred when the car went through a red light when Thiago was turning at a junction.
Gardai is also investigating whether the vehicle slowed after the collision before accelerating again.
A source said: “The driver was identified fairly quickly after the incident, but there were three others in the car at the time of the incident.
“The driver was completely reckless in the car, but has yet to admit his role in the incident.”
Thiago’s fiancee Teresa, also 28, confirmed that he will be cremated next week, but it is unclear whether his ashes will spread to Ireland or Brazil.
She also pleaded, “I am just asking the driver of this car to take responsibility for his actions.”
