Three wards have been closed in a busy Dublin hospital following the COVID-19 outbreaks.
Three patients and two staff members at Beaumont Hospital tested positive for coronavirus.
Additionally, more than 10 employees who considered themselves close contacts were asked to isolate themselves at home.
The closure of the three rooms was confirmed due to new cases of COVID-19 in an email sent to employees last week, the Irish Independent reports.
Professor Bill Tormey, who is a consultant in chemical pathology at Beaumont Hospital, said: “These cases suggest that we may have serious problems during the winter unless we can reduce the current level of spread.”
He said COVID-19 infections were expected at the hospital but “concerning.”
He added that the outbreaks show that people are getting sick enough to be admitted to hospital and that more people are infected with the virus.
He said: “Anyone over 60 should avoid crowds and try to stay out of the way of large groups of people. And people visiting those over 60 should always wear a mask. “
The hospital has implemented a series of new security measures and medical equipment to minimize visits to multiple rooms.
