As work progresses on the Midleton-Youhghal (MY) Greenway, excitement grows in East Cork and beyond.

Work on the 23 km greenway that runs along the old train line began in November 2019. It is expected to be operational, or by bicycle, in 2022.

When completed, the new greenway could attract 250,000 visitors a year, according to Cork City Council, which oversees the € 15 million project.

The greenway will include stopping points at the old Mogeely and Killeagh stations.

East Cork hopes to build on the success of the Waterford Greenway, which opened in 2017.

The 46 km road connecting the city of Waterford to Dungarvan via Kilmacthomas has transformed the local economy, won several awards and thousands of fans.

The Midleton-Youghal Greenway, traversing breathtaking views, has similar potential.

The old rail line between Midleton and Youghal opened in 1860 with daily passenger services in operation until 1963. Services were reduced to only Sundays and the last train ended in 1987.

The MY Greenway will pass through Ballyvergan Marsh, a unique coastal wetland, and enjoy stunning views of Youghal Bay.
