One of those involved in the rescue effort, surfer Damien Kilgannon of Dromore West in Co Sligo, said the current had carried them out to sea rather quickly.
He said they had been taken beyond an area known as “the rupture.”
Both are understood to be shocked but unharmed after their ordeal.
Kilgannon paid tribute to the efforts of the locals and emergency services to monitor and resolve the situation.
A large group of people watched the rescue effort unfold from shore and applauded the local surfers involved in their return, shortly after 8:30 p.m.
