The Cork City Council has launched a new recruitment drive for full-time firefighters, asking new recruits to ‘be a difference’ for the city they will serve.
This is the first time the fire service has opened to new recruits in eight years.
Up to 20 firefighters will be recruited initially, and a panel will be established from which future recruits will be selected.
The news comes as the Cork City Fire Brigade marks the centenary of the burning of Cork as firefighters tried to prevent the spread of devastating fires started by Crown forces.
Their heroic efforts will be marked through a series of events later in the year, but they are meant to inspire a new addition of firefighters who will protect a city very different from the one in the 1920s.
The Cork City Fire Department operates from stations throughout the city, including a Fire Service held at Ballincollig.
The Operational Brigade is part of the Cork City Building and Fire Control Department, which comprises a multifaceted team consisting of approximately 180 administrative, technical and operational staff.
Speaking about the recruitment drive, Fire Chief John Ryan said the fire service hopes to attract “the best of the entire community” – people who are “willing to make a difference.”
“The Brigade has a long and proud history, but the common thread is that the city’s firefighters are always ready to protect, prevent and respond.
“Only the best candidates will qualify, however it is important to note that all candidates will be tested on a wide range of skills and abilities.
“This includes not only physical strength, but also attitude and fitness,” he said.
“There is no stereotypical firefighter, but there are good team players.”
The ‘Be the Difference’ recruiting drive features Station Officer Irene Wallace along with Firefighters Gabor Molnar and Ger Dolan.
During the month of September, a series of videos specially commissioned with the work of the three will be published on social networks.
Station officer Irene Wallace said being a firefighter is “like being part of a family” and says she couldn’t imagine doing any other job.
“Every time we jump into the engine on the way to a call, we know that we are only as good as the sum of our parts.” If you want to serve your community and you want to do work that is challenging and rewarding, then this job is for you.
“As modern firefighters, we want the public to be educated about fire hazards so they never have to call us.
“However, we also need them to know that we will always be there if they need us,” he said.
Applications for the Cork City Fire Brigade firefighter position can be submitted between Friday, September 4, 2020, and 4 p.m. on Friday, September 25, 2020.
