A second-tier school in Kerry sent students from a class home after a student tested positive for Covid-19.
The student had had limited contact with a small number of peers in a single school class and for a limited number of hours before realizing the positive result and immediately reported it to the school.
The school underwent a disinfection regimen and the rooms that had been used were thoroughly cleaned and disinfected before other classes used them.
Separately, two classes from an elementary school were also sent home after a child tested positive. Middle and elementary schools are located in the same region of the county.
In the case of the high school, a limited number of students were in contact with the individual student who tested positive and the contact was a few days ago and for a limited number of hours. The boy had not returned to school with the other classes.
It is understood that the rooms that had been used were thoroughly cleaned and disinfected before full classes resumed and all students returned. A source from the school said they are pleased that contact has been limited to a small number of students and they have been sent home.
However, the high school is awaiting advice from HSE on whether it will have to close all classes and has been in close contact with the health agency.
No further details are known about the elementary school, but it is understood that both schools are guided by HSE advice.
On Wednesday, an elementary school in Co Clare closed due to Covid-19, just days after the schools reopened after a six-month closure caused by the coronavirus pandemic.
And in Dublin, two elementary schools sent some pupils home earlier in the week after a child in each school tested positive for the virus.
